Oparanya asks Kenyans to buy affordable houses instead of building on ancestral land

Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Development, Wycliffe Oparanya, has urged Kenyans, especially those living in rural areas, to embrace the government’s affordable housing programme instead of building on ancestral land.
Speaking during President William Ruto’s Western Development Tour in Busia County on Friday, October 31, 2025, Oparanya said that the new housing units are open to all Kenyans and not just for those living in Nairobi.
He noted that the affordable housing initiative offers a flexible payment plan that allows buyers to pay in instalments.

The CS further urged residents to relocate to the affordable houses, noting that it is not necessary to live on the farm to remember their late parents by seeing their graves.

In addition, Oparanya urged residents to let ancestral land be used for farming, saying it would help boost food security.

Project’s benefits
While stating the benefits of the programme, Oparanya said Kenya is moving forward under Ruto’s leadership, noting that the country’s progress begins with small steps, and the affordable housing project is one of those steps toward national development.

The former governor added that the project is creating jobs for young people and benefiting those supplying materials such as sand and stones, noting that such efforts will accelerate the country’s growth, a vision the President has already embraced.
