Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has reassured parents and guardians that the government has no intention of shutting down schools amid speculation of expected early closures due to funding delays.

Speaking on Friday, August 8, 2025, during a visit to Kilifi, Ogamba clarified that despite challenges experienced during the previous term, the government is committed to ensuring uninterrupted funding for free and compulsory education across Kenya.

Capitation funds timely

Ogamba confirmed that the government is working closely with the National Treasury to ensure capitation funds reach schools promptly for the upcoming third term.

“We are making every effort to ensure capitation comes slightly earlier than usual this term to avoid the challenges faced previously,” he said.

He reassured stakeholders that free education remains a constitutional right for every child in Kenya, and funding mechanisms are being strengthened to uphold this mandate.

Teacher recruitment progress

The CS highlighted significant progress in teacher recruitment, noting that 76,000 teachers were hired last year and an additional 24,000 are expected to join by December 2025. “The government is committed to improving the quality of education by increasing teaching staff across the country,” Ogamba said.

He also mentioned ongoing collaborations with county governments and the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to build and equip more classrooms and laboratories, enhancing the learning environment for students.

Government efficiency drive

Ogamba touched on broader government reforms, including the merger of 42 semi-autonomous government agencies (SAGAs) to improve efficiency and reduce duplication of resources. He explained that some agencies are being integrated into their parent ministries to streamline operations and better utilize public funds.

“We want a government that is lean, efficient, and focused on delivering quality services to Kenyans,” Ogamba stated.

He urged parents, teachers, and county leaders to continue supporting the government’s education initiatives to ensure all children access quality education.
