Police in Nyeri county have arrested three women alleged to be behind the female genital mutilation of six girls at Muthuthi-ini village in Mukurwe-ini constituency.
The six girls who had already undergone the cut have been rescued and taken to Mukurweini Level Four hospital for treatment.
Among those who were arrested over the incident include the owner of the home where the illegal activity took place and some of the victims’ relatives who were found in the home where they are believed to have escorted the girls for the cut.
While confirming the incident, Mukurweini police boss Patrick Manyasia said that police officers were tipped off by the locals concerning the bizarre incident and immediately swung into action in order to rescue the girls but already six of them had undergone the cut.
“The locals tipped us that they suspected an illegal activity was happening at a home of one of them and when our officers rushed to the said home, they found six girls had already been cut and were rushed to hospital for treatment while the owner of the home and some of the victims’ relatives were arrested,” he said.
The three suspects have been detained at Mukurwe-ini police station awaiting to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
