Business women in Gatung’ang’a town in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri county have accused police officers of sexually assaulting them for flouting curfew rules.
Their allegations come after a September 25 raid by armed police officers in the busy town. They claim the men in blue started assaulting locals asking them to close business at 7:00 pm before the normal curfew hours lapsed.
Locals protested the move by the officers leading to a stand-off that left one man sustaining a gun shot wound.
Speaking after the incident, area Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua called on the government to explain why police officers have continuously been assaulting locals.
Gachagua claims that it is unfortunate that the officers mete violence on citizens at a time when the country is still experiencing an increase in extra judicial killings.
Gachagua told the media that the police officers shot a man, whose identity is yet to be revealed, after he cautioned them from harassing his elderly father.
“A young man who protested the beating up of his father attracted their wrath where they opened fire, shot him leaving him for the dead,” the lawmaker said.
He further revealed that the man was rushed to Karatina Hospital where he is still fighting for his life.
Aside from demanding sex from women, Gachagua stated that he was informed that the police officers also tried to extort money from locals.
Cases linked to extra-judicial killings have been on the increase in the recent past. So worse and numerous are the cases that they have attracted the attention of Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga and other notable figures.
Six police officers are currently facing a court case after they allegedly murdered two brothers namely; Benson Njiru Ndwiga and his younger brother Emmanuel Mutura Ndwiga.
The duo, were last seen in the custody of police officers, only for their bodies to be found at Embu Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue.
