Nyandiwa Level 4 clarifies ghost hospital funding claims

Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital has responded to claims that it received Ksh20 million from the Social Health Authority (SHA) while being labelled a ghost hospital.
Speaking on Monday, August 25, 2025, hospital officials clarified that the funds were deposited into the hospital’s legitimate account, contrary to reports linking the money to a nonexistent facility in West Kamagak, Kasipul.
The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Frederick Owino, explained that the hospital operates a bank account under its former name, Nyandiwa Dispensary, which may have caused confusion among the public and the media.

“I can confirm that we received the payment for August. The amount is over Ksh20 million, though my accountant will provide the exact figure. This money was deposited into our official account, not any ghost facility,” Dr. Owino said.
Hospital operational
The clarification comes after a series of reports and social media posts claiming misappropriation of funds meant for Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital.
Residents in the area had previously raised concerns, claiming that the hospital had never been operational and that they had to travel long distances to access medical services in neighbouring Rachuonyo
However, hospital management insists that these claims are misleading. Dr. Owino emphasised that the hospital has been providing medical services and that the disbursed funds were used for hospital operations, salaries, and patient care.
“The hospital has been functional, and the funding from SHA has always been directed toward legitimate expenses. We urge the public to rely on verified sources before circulating such claims,” he added.

The SHA CEO, Mercy Mwangangi, also defended the disbursement, stating that reports suggesting the hospital was a “ghost facility” were false and undermined responsible journalism principles, including accuracy, fairness, and balance.
Hospital officials further noted that ongoing communication with the local community aims to clarify the hospital’s status and ensure residents are aware of the services available at Nyandiwa Level 4.
The hospital reassures residents and stakeholders that funds received are accounted for and continue to support the delivery of quality healthcare in Homa Bay County.
