Marsabit residents have appealed to the government to consider reinstating the operations of public service buses plying the Moyale-Nairobi route in order to ease suffering.

Moyale charter Chairman of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mr. Ali Muumin said the ban by NTSA affecting buses belonging to Moyale Raha Sacco had paralysed public transport and affected trade.

Mr. Muumin said on the telephone on Sunday that the ban had left travelers under the mercy of Moyale Liner and Crown companies who have since hiked fares by 100 percent.

“The only remaining buses, Moyale Liner and Crown have hiked fares to Nairobi from Sh 2,000 to Sh. 4,000,” he said adding that the buses cannot meet the demand which has left many travelers stranded including students.

The chairman appealed to NTSA to speed up the review of buses operating on the Moyale-Nairobi route to enable the stranded students to go back to school after the half-term break.

According to Mr. Muumin, the border town of Moyale has witnessed a rise in prices of essential commodities that traders transport using the buses from neighboring counties.

This comes hot on the heels of a government suspension of operating licenses of SACCOs with buses found to be in contravention of traffic rules and over security concerns in the Northern region of the country.
