Muthama gives stance on backing leader from Ukambani for presidency

Johnson Muthama, the Parliamentary Service Commission Commissioner, has weighed in on when politicians should declare support for presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kyangwithya, Kitui, Muthama emphasised that the timing of political alignments is critical.

He noted that with the 2027 polls still years away, now is not the right moment for politicians to announce backing for any candidate, including a prospective leader from Ukambani. Among those angling to contest for the top seat is Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who is from the region.

“This is not the right time to talk about supporting a presidential candidate from Ukambani. The main dynamics will take place later, and that decision will be made at the right moment,” he said.

“We need to have ears to the general elections. A lot of things will happen before 2027,” he said, highlighting the importance of patience and strategy in political manoeuvring.

Muthama explained that seasoned politicians do not rush decisions. Instead, they act when circumstances demand it.

“Good politicians don’t prepare too early or feel threatened by any situation. They wake up at the right time and make their move. That is how you achieve results in politics,” he said.

He noted that acting prematurely in the political arena could backfire, exposing politicians to miscalculations or weakening their negotiating position. Timing, he said, is a critical tool in securing political advantage.

Evolving landscape

The former Senator also reflected on the need for politicians to be flexible and responsive, adapting their strategies as the political landscape evolves.

He cautioned that making public declarations or aligning too early could lead to unnecessary risks and political backlash.

Muthama’s remarks come amid ongoing speculation over the potential presidential candidates and alliances for the 2027 elections. His message underscores the importance of strategic thinking and situational awareness for those navigating Kenya’s complex political environment.

He concluded that a measured approach allows politicians to evaluate opportunities, build coalitions, and make decisions that maximise their chances of electoral success.

“The timing of your move in politics is as important as the move itself,” he said, emphasising that patience and strategy are fundamental for anyone seeking office in the coming election cycle.
