Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has ordered security personnel in the country to run after the social media users who shared fake allegations of his death.

In a video on his social media account, Museveni,76, stated that the culprits who spread the news with total abandon should be stopped including the Ugandans in the diaspora.

“We need to crack down on the people that are misemploying social media, including the Ugandans abroad. Many are now using it to spread baseless and tasteless news with total abandon. I call upon security to look into this. It must be stopped, get these people,” he noted.

Further, the sixth term serving president argued that the negative use of social media is not a security issue but an idiotic problem that should be solved urgently.

“I don’t think it is a security problem but it is an idiotic problem that we need to solve. I need to check with the security service to locate quickly the ones who tell such stories because you waste people’s time. They should go for you,” he added.

This comes shortly after he hinted that he was ready to retire.

Museveni who has now served the country for 35 years back to back might be leaving the office upon the expiry of his current term of office in 2026.

Speaking in an event attended by Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday, July 5, 2021, he said he was ready to go look after his cows.

“I want to go and look after my cows. Create a centre of gravity, I push you there, then I go and look after my cows. I am very glad that His Excellency Ruto and other Kenyan and East African leaders support this idea.”

He spoke this after laying a foundation stone for the multibillion Biological Drugs and mRNA Vaccine manufacturing facility.
