Musalia Mudavadi’s party Amani National Congress (ANC) on Wednesday unveiled Eliud Owalo, a former aide of Raila Odinga, as their candidate for the Kibra Constituency by-election.
Owalo recently resigned from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in a strategic move to better his chances of clinching the Kibra seat by extricating himself from the crowded ODM.
ANC is set issue Owalo with a certificate on Wednesday at their party headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi.
Owalo’s former party, ODM, and the ruling Jubilee are also set to field candidates in what is set to be a crowded field.
The seat fell vacant in July following death of MP Ken Okoth who succumbed to cancer.
So far, the race to succeed Ken Okoth has not been a dull one.
Jubilee Party, which had hinted that it would not field a candidate in the spirit of the handshake with Raila had a change of mind.
But in what appears to be a split within the ruling party, a list with names of aspirants released on social media on Monday which included international football star McDonald Mariga was disputed.
Deputy President William had to intervene after the Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju disowned the list that had been forwarded to the electoral commission.
On the ODM side, there was plenty of drama on Sunday after an aspirant, DJ Kriss Darling, went on one knee to beg Raila to give him the party’s ticket.
Another ODM hopeful, Ken Okoth’s brother Imran, was booed off stage by a section of the crowd that had gathered for the unveiling of the aspirants.
The ODM aspirants will battle it out for the party ticket on Saturday, August 31, 2019.
