In a statement on Monday, November 3, 2025, Murkomen described the tragedy as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by heavy rainfall, particularly in landslide-prone areas.
“This morning, a rockfall incident in the Kibendo area claimed two lives and left three others injured. My heartfelt condolences go to the families and friends of the deceased. I also wish a quick recovery to those injured,” Murkomen said.
He commended the swift response by the County Government of Elgeyo-Marakwet and the Kenya Red Cross, acknowledging their efforts in providing immediate assistance and managing the emergency.

He urged residents to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and report any signs of earth movement to local authorities.
The Interior CS emphasised the importance of early reporting and preparedness to prevent further loss of life.
“We continue to call on residents in the region to be aware of their surroundings and to report any signs of earth movements to local authorities,” he stated.
This incident adds to the series of weather-related disasters reported across Elgeyo-Marakwet, where 26 people were confirmed dead. Murkomen led rescue operations in Chesongoch, Marakwet East.
Twenty-five people remain missing from the earlier disaster, while 26 survivors are receiving treatment in the hospital. Rescue teams have faced challenges as some victims may be buried deeply in mud, complicating retrieval efforts.

The most affected areas include Edow Village, which lost 19 residents, Embobut with five fatalities, and Sambirir, where two people perished. Murkomen attributed the devastating events in Elgeyo Marakwet to years of unchecked deforestation and unsustainable farming practices.
He described the landslides as a national catastrophe and warned that more lives could be lost if residents fail to follow government safety advisories amid the ongoing heavy rains.
