Murang’a: Postmortem reveal cause of death for woman found stuffed in delivery bag

The post-mortem of 51-year-old Hannah Wanjiku from Kigumo, Murang’a, who was murdered in cold blood on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, has revealed that she died of strangulation.

The post-mortem was conducted at the AIC Githumu Hospital mortuary by a government pathologist in Murang’a, in the presence of family members and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Charles Kariuki, a family member, said the pathologist revealed to them that the deceased was strangled to death using a thin wire or a thin nylon line.

Kariuki also said the pathologist indicated that the act could not have been carried out by one person, hinting that two or more people were involved in the cold-blooded murder.

“He said the culprit was probably assisted by another person who held the deceased’s hands so that she could not fight back,” Kariuki said.

Further, according to the autopsy report, the body had no other physical injuries but had a broken spine, which they believe occurred when the body was forced to fit into the sack.

“He also told us Wanjiku could have been killed hours before the body was put in the sack because it had no blood clots, even with the injury at the back,” he added.

The family is hopeful that justice will prevail and the culprits will be brought to book.

Four suspects, including her two sons, her estranged husband and a taxi driver, are in police custody and are assisting the police with investigations.

The body of the mother of six was packed in a bag and delivered as a parcel in Kangari town, an incident that left residents reeling in shock.

Kigumo Sub-County Police Commander Hassan Bashir said the four suspects are helping investigating officers with information that will aid in establishing the circumstances under which the woman was killed.

Bashir, however, appealed to members of the public who may have any information regarding the incident to share it with the police to help hasten the investigation.

“We will leave no stone unturned and anybody involved in the murder will be arrested and charged,” he added.
