Murang’a MCA explains reason behind Ruto’s dwindling popularity

Edwin Wairagu, the Gitugi Ward MCA from Murang’a County, has blamed President William Ruto for his dwindling popularity not in the Mt Kenya region alone, but nationwide.
Speaking to Kameme TV on Friday, August 1, 2025, the MCA boldly said that Ruto was not only being misled on important issues but had also allowed himself to drift away from the real concerns affecting common Kenyans in villages across the country.
Misleading advice from top officials
According to the outspoken ward representative Edwin Wairagu, the people currently advising the president are doing more harm than good.
He said they seem to live in a bubble and do not understand how deeply people in rural areas are struggling.
“We are trending on a very dangerous path. I would tell President William Ruto to search for people to advise him. Let him look for us, MCAs, to advise him because it appears those advising him currently are misleading him on various issues,” he said.
Wairagu added that Members of the County Assembly, being close to the people, understand village-level frustrations and would offer more practical, people-driven solutions.
A disconnect between the government and the grassroots
The Gitugi MCA also accused the current administration of ignoring rising economic pain and shifting attention to less urgent matters. He said prices of essential goods and services continue to soar while job opportunities are scarce and public confidence in government is steadily dropping.
Wairagu said Ruto’s team had become blind to the true situation on the ground, focusing more on public relations than actual governance. He stressed that the economic suffering Kenyans are facing was contributing to the president’s falling approval ratings.
A bold proposal for Ruto
As a way forward, the Wairagu proposed that Ruto convene regular consultative meetings with grassroots leaders like MCAs to stay in touch with reality. He argued that such interactions would help the president hear the truth directly, instead of relying on praise-singing allies who only tell him what he wants to hear.
Wairagu finished by warning that unless a change happens soon, Ruto risks completely losing the trust of the people.
