Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has called on secondary schools’ principals to refrain from withholding result slips over fee arrears.

In a statement published on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, Wamuchomba said that most needy students are unable to continue with higher education because their results slips are withheld by their former schools.

Additionally, the vocal lawmaker questioned the law that most principals are using for students with fee arrears.

“Most students are losing opportunities to join Universities and colleges because their results slips are withheld by secondary schools over fee arrears. Which law is this, that secondary schools are using in Kenya? Last week, I had to intervene for a few students in my constituency but sadly, couldn’t manage schools outside of my constituency,” She said.

Suggesting an alternative means, the lawmaker further asked the schools’ principals to make the fee arrears loan that students pay in instalments instead of withholding result slips.

She maintained that the results slips are properties of the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and every school must release them to respective learners since they already paid for it.

“Why not make it a loan if it has to be paid? Results slips are the property of the examined who already paid KNEC for it! Knec result slips are not an asset to any school,” Wamuchomba suggested.

“Do you mean building classes or buying a school bus is more important than the future of a student who already gave you all they could afford?”

She further added that students from needy backgrounds continue to be disadvantaged by the systems meant to rescue them adding that unpaid fees should be a contract between the schools and parents.

“If we have to claim for unpaid Fees, the contract was between the school and the parents, not the students some of whom are minors. Unfortunately, students from disadvantaged backgrounds continue to be disadvantaged by systems meant to rescue them. I feel for the voiceless students. I wish I could do more to assist,” she added.
