Mosiria explains why he chose pizza for vulnerable children in Kibra

Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has defended his decision to treat vulnerable children in Kibra to pizza, saying the gesture was about joy, dignity, and giving them hope.
His response comes after online critics questioned why he opted for pizza instead of the usual meals such as rice, ugali or beans.
Taking to his official X account Monday night, September 1, 2025, Mosiria said that for many years, those children have been fed the usual meal, which he acknowledged as good and nourishing, adding that he wanted to serve them something different.
“A few individuals have questioned my decision to share pizza with the vulnerable children of Kibra. I want to share the heart behind this gesture. For years, these children have been served ordinary meals rice, ugali, or beans, which are good and nourishing,” Mosiria said.
“But on this day, I wanted to give them something different, something they often see on TV or hear others talk about, yet may never get the chance to taste. For me, this was not just about food; it was about giving them joy, a sense of dignity, and a glimpse of hope that one day, they too can enjoy the little pleasures many take for granted.”
First-time eating pizza
Mosiria drew from his personal experience, recalling that he first tasted pizza at the age of 30. At the time, he bought it for his four-year-old son so that the boy could experience what he himself had never enjoyed as a child.
“I remember vividly I first tasted pizza at the age of 30. At that time, my firstborn son was just four years old. I bought it for him, not for myself, because I wanted him to experience what I never had the privilege to enjoy as a child,” he added.
“When I finally took a bite, I realised how special it was not just the taste, but the feeling of finally experiencing something I had always missed. Coming from a humble background, my parents simply couldn’t afford such things.”
Additionally, he noted that he did not choose to feed them pizza out of ignorance or extravagance but out of love.
“That memory inspired me. And so, when I chose pizza for these children, it wasn’t out of ignorance or extravagance, but out of love, empathy, and the desire to give them a taste of something that says: You too deserve the best in life,” Mosiria stated.
He urged Kenyans to continue supporting vulnerable groups in different ways through meals, clothing, education, or even simple acts of kindness that bring joy.
“Let us continue to support the vulnerable in every way possible, whether through ordinary meals, clothing, education, or even small joys like this. Every act of kindness counts. Together, we can not only feed stomachs but also feed hearts with hope for a brighter tomorrow,” he urged.
