Mosiria condemns Somali fans after desecrating Kenya flag during CAF match at Nyayo Stadium

Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has condemned the actions of Somali fans who desecrated the Kenyan flag during the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League preliminary matches at Nyayo Stadium.
The match played on Saturday, September 20, 2025, saw Police FC defeat Mogadishu City Stars 3-1.

In the video, one of the youths was seen feeling agitated as he put the Kenyan flag on a chair and stepped on it repeatedly while being filmed.
Another group of two boys was seen walking in the stadium when they suddenly threw the flag down and stepped on it. One of them picked it up and rubbed the flag on his groin, while another fan was seen rubbing a Somali flag on the faces of two other female fans.
Speaking in a video shared on his X platform on Tuesday morning, September 22, 2025, Mosiria expressed deep disappointment, terming the act a show of disrespect to Kenya and its people.
He noted that while football is a unifying sport, fans must uphold respect for national symbols, especially when hosted in a foreign country.

“There are things you may take lightly as jokes, but you must respect the Kenyan flag. At Nyayo Stadium, I saw some of the Gen Z fans, some from neighbouring countries, stepping on the Kenyan flag and even using it in ways meant to demean it. That is disrespecting a national symbol that represents our unity as a people,” he said.
Additionally, he explained that the colours of the flag hold significant meaning and must be honoured, not ridiculed.
“When you disrespect that flag, you are disrespecting the people of Kenya, who allowed you to play here and enjoy freedom in peace. No Kenyan would dare do such to your country’s flag.”
Mosiria further called on Kenyan youth to speak out against such acts instead of remaining silent.
“Our Kenyan Gen Zs nmeona mmenyamza, hili jambo lazima lizungumziwe. Ambieni hao vijana waache madharau ndogo ndogo; tunawaheshimu, tunawapenda, na tumewapatia uhuru wa kufanya biashara Kenya, kuishi, na pia wengine wamekuja wanaejoy freedom,” he added.
He reminded fans that Kenya has always been an accommodating country, offering space for foreigners to do business, live freely, and enjoy rights without harassment.
“Kenya is one of the few countries in Africa where you can come, live, and work without disturbance. That freedom must not be abused,” Mosiria said.
