Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has distanced himself from the abduction and rape of a Mombasa blogger, Bruce John, who was assaulted in 2024.

While distancing himself from the allegations, the governor revealed how he cooperated with the investigation team in a bid to prove his innocence.

“I took myself to the DCI; I made it very clear. I would be the last person. For those who know me, I was more than willing for even them to trace all those numbers that were called or anything else and nothing,” Abdulswamad said.

On his part the Governor revealed his relationship with the blogger where he recounted his past contributions to the blogger’s life even before the 2024 incident.

According to Abdulswamad his relationship with the Mombasa blogger Bruce John dated back before the 2022 general elections where he also revealed he had known him at a personal level.

He went on expressing how, together with his family, they felt after the assault ordeal that happened to the blogger in the Miritini area of Mombasa County.

“Do I feel for the young man? I truly do. Because I know him. I know him as an individual. I knew him prior to the elections. I know him after. I know what I have done for him. I don’t want to talk about it, you know, because I don’t necessarily have to say what it is that I did even before all these things happened,” Abdulswamad said.

He further added, “Do I truly feel bad about whatever it is that happened?  I truly do. But did it have anything to do with me or my family? Not at all.”

Mombasa blogger ordeal

At the time, the Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir went on to record a statement at the Regional Police Headquarters regarding the abduction and sodomy of a 25-year-old blogger based in the Coastal city.

At the time, the victim, who was identified as Bruce John, revealed that a group of about 20 county officers abducted him at his home in Bamburi on September 12 2024, for criticising Nassir’s leadership, before assaulting and taking turns sexually assaulting him at the Miritini area.

“Nimejileta hapa kwa hiari yangu kwa sababu hakuna yeyote yuko juu ya sheria. Hicho kitendo lazima kiweze kulaaniwa,” said Nassir.

“Lazima haki iweze kupatikana kwa huyu kijna na vitendo kama hivi. Nimeomba DCI waweze kuharakisha na waweze kumaliza hili jambo ili kijana aweze kupata haki yake.”
