Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed Thursday night, September 4, 2025, after a fierce fire broke out at Katani Villas, a gated residential estate in Syokimau along Katani Road.

Residents say the inferno started around 7:30 pm and quickly spread through several homes, forcing families to run for safety. Thick smoke could be seen billowing above the estate, visible as far as Mombasa Road, as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

Firefighters responded to distress calls

Firefighters from both Machakos and Nairobi counties responded to distress calls, working alongside residents to put out the blaze. The firefighting operation went late into the night as crews struggled to contain the fast-spreading flames. By the time the fire was subdued, several houses had been reduced to shells, with valuables and household goods lost in the incident.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Residents, however, described tense and chaotic moments as they tried to salvage their belongings while also helping their neighbours.

“We were caught completely off guard, but everyone did what they could to help,” one resident said.

Cause of fire under investigation

The cause of the fire is yet to be established, with authorities expected to launch investigations in the coming days. As of Friday morning, no official statement had been released on the extent of the damage or the possible trigger of the inferno.

Katani Villas, located just off Mombasa Road, is a modern gated community popular for its affordable housing and proximity to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Nairobi’s central business district.

The estate is home to dozens of families, many of whom are now counting heavy losses.

Emergency teams have assured residents that updates will be shared once investigations are complete. Meanwhile, community members and local leaders have called for improved fire preparedness and quicker response systems to prevent such incidents from causing further devastation in the future.
