Mashujaa Day ranked among Kenya’s most cherished public holidays – survey

A new survey has ranked Mashujaa Day among Kenya’s most beloved public holidays, highlighting its deep emotional and historical resonance across generations.
According to the Stahili Pulse Report, which interviewed 3,241 randomly selected Kenyan adults across all 47 counties, Mashujaa Day emerged as the third most cherished holiday, after Madaraka Day and New Year’s Day.
The nationwide poll explored citizens’ sentiments toward Kenya’s public holidays — including which events stir the most national pride, reflection, and celebration.
Over 1,000 respondents said Mashujaa Day, which honours Kenya’s heroes and heroines, was their favourite occasion.

This year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County on Monday, October 20, 2025, took on an unusually sombre tone.
The event comes just days after the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, widely regarded as one of Kenya’s foremost liberation heroes.
President William Ruto led the national commemoration, with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye serving as the guest of honour.
The celebration’s theme was hastily revised to pay tribute to Raila Odinga, whose passing on October 15, 2025, in India, prompted seven days of national mourning.
Despite speculation that the festivities might be postponed, the government opted to proceed, framing the ceremony as a continuation of the ideals Raila championed — unity, courage, and national service.
Raila was buried on Sunday, October 19, at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, in accordance with his will, which requested burial within 72 hours of his death.
As Kenyans mark Mashujaa Day 2025 today, the mood is a mix of grief and gratitude — a poignant reminder that the day set aside to celebrate heroes now doubles as a tribute to one of the most consequential figures in the nation’s post-independence history.
