Maraga: I won’t let family or friends do business with govt

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has made a bold pledge to Kenyans, vowing to keep his leadership free from corruption, nepotism, and conflict of interest if elected as president during the 2027 general election.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, after an X Space and TikTok Live session, Maraga assured the public that neither his family nor friends will be allowed to do business with the government under his watch.

“As I sign off from this X Space and TikTok Live, let me assure you that I will not allow my family and friends to do business with the government. I will not steal from you and will not allow anybody to steal your money,” Maraga stated.

Following the law

Maraga emphasised that following the law is the surest way to rebuild Kenya’s economy and fix key sectors such as healthcare and education.

He went ahead to insist that public trust can only be restored if leaders shun personal enrichment and focus on service.

It is worth noting that the former CJ had accused President William Ruto of violating the constitution.

“I will ensure that the law is followed because by following the law, we grow our economy and fix our healthcare as well as education,” he wrote on X.

Maraga urged Kenyans to stay engaged in conversations about governance, announcing that the next session will take place in Mombasa next week.

“Join us in Mombasa next week to continue the conversations,” Maraga told his supporters.

The former CJ’s remarks come at a time when Kenyans have increasingly voiced frustration over leaders accused of awarding state tenders to close relatives and allies.

Maraga’s stance on corruption

Maraga has previously warned that officials who divert funds meant for medical services are directly responsible for the deaths of patients.

In a statement on Sunday, September 7, 2025, Maraga said it was shameful that payments were being made to the wrong people while patients continued to suffer in hospitals without adequate treatment or medication.

“Healthcare has been in the media for the last few days, unfortunately, for the wrong reasons. Payments are being made to the wrong people when there are patients suffering in hospitals. These are shameful things that we should get rid of, and sometimes you get surprised that the authorities concerned are not taking the right action,” he said.
