Maraga demands arrest of Amin, Kanja and DIG Lagat before June 25

Former Chief Justice (CJ) David Maraga has demanded the arrest of National Police Service (NPS) Inspector General Douglas Kanja, his deputy Eliud Lgata and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) director Mohammed Amin.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Monday, June 16, 2025, Maraga stated that Lagat should be prosecuted, as there is enough evidence of his implication in Ojwang’s murder, who died in detention on June 7, 2025.
“There is prima facie evidence that Eliud Lagat directly or indirectly, by himself or through his accomplices, is implicated in the illegal arrest, torture, strangulation and eventual murder of the late Albert Ojwang. Yet Lagat remains still in office,” he stated.
“It is now time to immediately arrest and institute prosecutions against Lagat. “Integrity demands that we must end impunity as guided by law and moral standing,” he stated.
Further, he stated that Kanja and Amin should be arrested for lying under oath and the role they played in Ojwang’s murder, saying Kenyans have lost trust in the institutions mandated with maintaining law and order.
The three institutions
“The three institutions charged with the maintenance of law and order, the NPS, DCI and IPOA, have lied under oath. Consequently, they have lost the trust of the Kenyan people. This cannot be allowed to continue. Our institutions of human rights and justice are in serious need of resettling and rebuilding,” he stated.
“To begin this rebuilding and resettling process, arrest and prosecutions of the Director of DCI and the IG for their role in the death of Albert Ojwang, abuse of office and/or perjury must happen forthwith,” he added.

Further, he has stated that if the three are not prosecuted, he will formally hold them accountable through private prosecutions.
“I support the efforts of Kenyans who have already petitioned the courts on private prosecution in regard to Albert Ojwang’s death. Of note, if no prosecution is commenced against the IG, DIG, or Lagat by June 25, 2025. I will be formally joining efforts that seek to hold them accountable through private prosecutions,” he added.
The former CJ has vowed to join Kenyans in demanding justice for the late action through demonstrations.
“I will be offering my solidarity by joining some of the freedom of assembly and expression until the resignation or removal from office and the arrest and charge of the IG, DIG, the director of DCI and their accomplices for their role in any criminal conduct concerning the murder of Albert Ojwang,” he stated.
