Former Chief Justice David Maraga has saluted Kenyans on TikTok for coming out in large numbers to support a man from Othaya in Nyeri, who has been operating on a catheter due to his inability to afford medical treatment.

Through his X handle on Sunday, September 28, 2025, the 2027 presidential hopeful also took the chance to blast the government-backed Social Health Authority (SHA), saying it had failed to take care of the suffering man from Nyeri, whose son moved masses on TikTok.

Kaluma Boy, the son, has been working in tea plantations, plucking tea leaves to support his father and struggling mother to cater to medical procedures.

He has been documenting the family’s struggles on TikTok, where his story touched millions of Kenyans.

Maraga salutes TikTok youth

In his post, Maraga praised the role of young people and content creators in showing solidarity with the family.

“Congratulations to the youth and TikTok creators for the massive turnout to support Kaluma Boy in Othaya today,” Maraga wrote.

The former chief justice said the support demonstrated that Kenyans, especially the youth, were ready to step in where government systems had failed.

He added that the show of unity in Othaya was proof that young people hold the key to shaping Kenya’s political future.

Register as voters

Maraga did not hold back in criticising the Social Health Authority, accusing the agency of abandoning Kenyans in their time of need.

“Shame on the government for lying, even at international fora, that SHA is working,” he stated.

He further urged young Kenyans to transform their energy on TikTok into political influence by registering as voters.

“I urge you, our youth, to translate your zeal and numbers to political power by joining the registration of voters commencing tomorrow as we move forward to #ResetRestoreRebuild Kenya #BallotRevolution,” Maraga added.

The remarks instantly went viral online, with thousands of Kenyans echoing his criticism of SHA and applauding the resilience of Kaluma Boy and his family.
