Kagio town residents in Kirinyaga County were treated to a rare scene when a 29-year-old man tried to slit his throat outside a popular bar.

Confirming the incident, Kirinyaga West Sub-County police commander David Kabena said that the man identified as Joseph Kirubi may be suffering from depression and requires counselling.

“The man was a pool attendant at a bar in Kagio. We rushed him to Kerugoya Level 4 hospital where he is recuperating following the incident,” he said.

The police boss also added that the man was drunk before the Saturday night incident.

According to those who witnessed the incident, Kirubi is said to have gone looking for a meal from an outlet within the premises where he ordered beef.

While the waitress was serving him, he allegedly grabbed the knife from her hand at a surprising speed and began to slit his throat.

Another man who was standing next to him waiting to be served immediately swung into action and snatched the knife from him.

However, after the rescue, he hurriedly walked out and picked a stick which he used to inflict more harm on his neck.

“I was in the process of serving him when he grabbed the knife from my hand and began to slit his own throat,” the waitress said.

It is alleged that the man had been heard vowing that he would take his own life.

“He was drinking at this bar and was saying strange things which include the thought of committing suicide. It’s like he was depressed,” another witness said.
