Leaders demand justice for 5 youth killed in Isiolo
Leaders and elders from Isiolo County are demanding justice following the alleged killing of five young men by security personnel in the Kom grazing area.
Speaking during a press briefing, Chari Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Hon. Halima Golle Abgundo and Borana Council of Elders Chairman Mohamed Konso led calls for accountability, condemning what they described as unlawful killings by government forces.
They also urged the immediate withdrawal of herders from Samburu and Marsabit counties, accusing them of encroaching on Isiolo’s community grazing lands.
According to the leaders, the five youths were pursuing livestock reportedly stolen over an extended period by rival groups when they were shot and killed by security officers. Another youth was injured and reportedly taken into custody in Wamba, Samburu County.
“The community has lost faith in government promises to recover stolen livestock,” former MCA Hassan Kumpa said.
Adding;
“I myself have been a victim of cattle rustling, and despite numerous assurances, no meaningful action has ever been taken. Instead, when community members attempt to reclaim their animals, they are met with brutal force.”
The leaders further accused the Samburu County Governor of supporting the actions that led to the deaths, heightening already simmering inter-county tensions.
Community members are now calling for a swift, independent investigation into the killings and for justice to be delivered to the victims and their families. They also urged the national government to address the longstanding issues of livestock theft and land encroachment, which they say continue to fuel conflict in the region.
