Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has uploaded the Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA) sample papers on the Competency Based Assessment (CBA) portal.

KNEC in a statement issued on Saturday, January 4, 2024, directed all schools to access the sample papers through the CBA portal.

A guideline on how schools can access the papers was also issued, with the Grade 9 evaluation set for this year.

“The KJSEA sample papers have been uploaded on the CBA portal for access by all schools. Here’s a guideline on how schools can access the papers,” a statement by KNEC reads in part.

How to access KJSEA sample papers

According to the issued guidelines, schools are required to access the papers by first accessing the CBA portal.

They are then required to log into the portal using the assessment centre log in credentials, and then click on the grade 8 portal, from where they will click on the instructions and Sample Papers button.

All the uploaded papers shall be displayed, with the schools expected to click on view button to view a specific paper.

Here is a detailed step by step guide on how to access the papers;

  1. Access the CBA portal using the link: cba.knec.ac.ke
  2. Log into the CBA portal using the assessment centre login credentials
  3. Click on the Grade 8 portal
  4. Click on the instructions & Sample Papers button
  5. All the uploaded papers shall be displayed
  6. To view a specific paper, click on its view button
  7. To download the paper, click on the Download button
  8. Remember to logout from the system
  9. Keep your login credentials confidential to avoid unauthorised access to confidential data.

KJSEA

The KJSEA will play a significant role in shaping students’ future career paths.

Upon Grade 9 also known as Junior Secondary School, students will progress to Senior Secondary School (SSS), where they will select their career pathways.

The outcomes of both the formative (school-based) and summative (KJSEA) assessments will be used to report on students’ progress and help guide their selection of appropriate pathways in SSS.

In addition to refining the assessment itself, KNEC will conduct a study to understand students’ interests and preferences, which will inform career pathway decisions as students enter senior secondary.

The pioneer class of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will be transitioning to Grade 9 on January 6, 2025, when the schools will be reopening for the 2025 academic year.

In October, the government projected it would complete 16,000 classrooms by December to support the transition of learners from Grade 8 to Grade 9.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba in a statement issued on Saturday, January 4, said that the construction of the classrooms is currently 93 percent complete.

“The pioneer cohort of the Competency-Based Curriculum will transit to Grade 9 this Term. This is a major milestone in the roll-out of this transformative curriculum. To ensure seamless transition to Grade 9, the Government initiated the construction of 16,000 classrooms countrywide in four phases. The completion status thus far is at 93%,” the statement read in part.
