The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) fraternity has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its Chairperson Roseline Odhiambo Odede.
In a statement on Saturday, January 4, 2025, the commission Vice Chairperson Raymond Nyeris said that Roseline died on Friday, January 3, 2025, after a short illness.
“It is with shock and deep sorrow that I inform you of the demise of Roseline Odhiambo Odede, HSC, Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, that happened yesterday, Friday 3rd January 2025 after a short illness,” Nyeris said.
Eulogizing her, Nyeris described Roseline’s untimely death as a big blow to the commission adding that they had the privilege to serve with her as the chairperson.
In addition, the commission sympathised with the family of Roseline and urged the public to join in celebrating her life and legacy, whose commitment to human rights will continue to inspire the commission’s work.
“Her untimely death is a big blow to the Commission and the Nation at large. As a Commission, we had the privilege of serving with Roseline Odede as the Chairperson at the helm of the KNCHR’s leadership.
“During this period of mourning, we send our message of condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends and all those who knew Roseline. May the memories of her exceptional service be comfort and strength in this difficult time,” Nyeris added.
Who is Odede?
Odede was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a certified mediator, an arbitrator and a Social and Environmental Impact Auditor and Assessor.
Previously, she was a nationally recognised expert in gender, governance, policy, and human rights and served as the Vice Chairperson of the Judges Magistrates and Vetting Board.
Apart from KNCHR, Odede has also held several leadership positions in several professional societies, including the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, East Africa Law Society, Law Society of Kenya and FIDA Kenya.
