Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has sounded a warning to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over remarks he made during a live interview about what could become of the country should the will of the people be overturned in the 2027 polls.

Speaking in the Senate on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Khalwale castigated Gachagua over the remarks, noting that he would do everything in his capacity to ensure that the elections are peaceful.

“May I inform the former Deputy President that in 2027, we are going to do everything to make sure that the election is peaceful. We cannot imagine a situation whereby our children start fighting each other because one person or the other has lost the presidential election,” Khalwale observed.

Peaceful election

“That one I refuse, and I want to tell the former Deputy President that he is playing with fire. It is a route we can never go, we cannot allow, and we shall ensure that the 2027 election will be free, fair and peaceful.”

Khalwale equally indicated that while some senators had fewer children whom they could easily flee with in the case of violence in the country, he would be worried, given the number of children he has with his many wives.

“Maybe some of you have two children or a maximum of three; so, in the event of the country bursting, you could quickly look for passports for your wives and children. How about me? I would die out of worry,” Khalwale remarked.

“I need peace so that wherever my children wherever they be, I am assured of their safety. It is a thought that I cannot entertain.”

Gachagua under fire

While Gachagua indicated that any attempts to overturn the will of the people would be opposed, his comments have been received with a backlash from a section of politicians and government agencies.

O Wednesday, May 21, 2025, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) boss, Samuel Kobia, revealed that they had summoned the former deputy president over some of his remarks.

“NCIC is concerned with Rigathi Gachagua’s recent remarks. These thoughts are not only appalling but dangerously insensitive to the pain, loss and trauma suffered by thousands of Kenyans during one of the darkest chapters in our history,” Kobia said.

“The commission is working closely with other relevant government agencies to hold Rigathi Gachagua responsible and accountable for these reckless utterances.”
