Kenya’s first Attorney General Charles Njonjo dies aged 101

Former Attorney General Charles Njonjo is dead aged 101, President Uhuru Kenyatta has confirmed through a statement to media houses.

In the statement, President Kenyatta says he was informed about Njonjo’s death by his family.

The remains of Njonjo was taken to Lee Funeral home and later to Kariokor Hindu Cremation Centre where he has been cremated.

The family has said Njonjo was pronounced dead today at around 5:00 am.

President Kenyatta has termed him as a person who was not only known in Kenya but the world at large through his work of ensuring Kenya attained independence.

Born on January 23, 1920, he became Kenya’s first Attorney General who served between 1963 and 1979.

He was later appointed Constitutional Minister between 1980 and 1983 when he was forced to resign after being accused by President Moi of planning the 1982 coup.

He served as the Member of Parliament for Kikuyu from 1980 and during the period he got his popular name the ‘Duke of Kabeteshire.’

Njonjo was married in 1972 and had two children; Nimo and Wairimu Njonjo.
