Kenya Power lists parts of 5 counties set for blackout on July 29

By , July 28, 2025

Residents in parts of Nairobi, Nyeri, Embu, Murang’a, and Kiambu counties are set to experience almost a full-day power outage on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, due to planned maintenance by Kenya Power.

The blackout, which is expected to run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm in most of the areas, will impact dozens of estates, markets, schools, and businesses across the five counties.

In Nairobi County, several densely populated areas will be affected, including large sections of Kibera such as Makina B, Makongeni, Kisumu Ndogo, Lindi, and Mashimoni. Government institutions like the Huduma Centre, DC’s Office, Kibera Law Courts, and the Sudan Embassy are also on the list.

Parts of Kikuyu Road and Dagoretti are also targeted, with areas like Dagoretti Market, Shell Dagoretti, Waithaka Shopping Centre, and Ruthimitu schools expected to go dark. Greenspan Mall, Donholm Phase 8, and the surrounding estates in Jacaranda will similarly be affected.

In Nyeri County, the outage will hit multiple market centres in Mukurweini and Ichamara. Affected areas include Ichamara, Kimondo, Kihuti, Kiangondu, Thangathi, Kiuu, Ujamaa, and Mbugua markets.

Other areas

In Embu County, the blackout will stretch across Gitaru, Kindaruma, and Kiambere. Key installations affected include Kiambere Kengen Camps, Kenyatta Camp, Kindaruma Lower Camp, Water Meyer, and the Kiambere Complex. The disruption will also extend to several trading centres such as Mutuobare, Karura, Rutumbi, and Gatete.

Murang’a County will see outages around the Thika region, specifically Bluepost Hotel, Bahati Ridge Estate, Thika Coffee Mills, and Enkashiti Flowers. Other affected businesses include Shadnet Ltd, Simbi Roses, Ona Seedlings, and Kiriga Coffee Factory. Parts of Ngoigwa Estate and Maporomoko are also on the list.

Kenya Power has urged residents in the affected areas to make necessary arrangements ahead of the planned interruption. The utility company maintains that such maintenance is essential to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the electricity supply.

However, the widespread nature of the outages is expected to disrupt daily activities, particularly in urban residential areas, schools, and businesses. While the maintenance is temporary, concerns remain over the frequency of scheduled outages and their impact on local economies.
