Kenya Met warns of heavy rainfall and flooding risk this weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a forecast warning of intensifying rains across the country from Friday, October 3, through Sunday, October 5, 2025.

In a statement released on October 3, 2025, the department highlighted that ongoing rainfall affecting various parts of the nation is expected to increase in intensity and spread to more regions over the weekend.

The forecast specifies that the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Western, and North-western regions, are likely to experience rainfall.

“The ongoing rains over several parts of the country are expected to intensify in amount, spread, and intensity from today through Sunday. Rainfall is likely across parts of the Central Highlands (including Nairobi), the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Western, and North-western regions.”

Isolated heavy showers are expected to range between 20mm and 50mm within a 24-hour period, with some areas potentially exceeding 50mm. Such downpours may result in very heavy rainfall in certain localities, increasing the risk of localised flooding and waterlogging.

Potential impact

“Isolated heavy rainfall of 20mm – 50mm in 24 hours, and in some places very heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm in 24 hours, may occur over parts of these regions. These intense rains may lead to localised flooding, slippery roads, and possible disruptions, so stay alert and plan your activities carefully.”

Kenya Met has cautioned that the predicted heavy rainfall may disrupt daily activities, particularly in urban areas with limited drainage systems.

Slippery roads and reduced visibility are expected to affect transportation, while communities in low-lying and flood-prone areas could face temporary inundation.

Authorities and residents are advised to remain alert and take precautions to safeguard property and ensure personal safety.

The department emphasised the need for careful planning of travel and outdoor activities during this period. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official Kenya Met channels and local media, as rainfall amounts and distribution may vary across counties.

Forecast maps

To aid in preparation, Kenya Met has released detailed forecast maps illustrating areas expected to receive the heaviest rainfall over the weekend.

The maps guide both urban centres like Nairobi and rural regions, highlighting specific localities at risk.

Residents and local authorities are urged to follow updates closely to minimise the impact of the anticipated weather conditions.
