KeNHA announces alternative routes as traffic gridlock hits Nairobi–Nakuru highway
By William Muthama, August 29, 2025The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has urged motorists travelling between Nairobi and Nakuru to use alternative routes following a heavy traffic gridlock that hit the busy highway on the night of Thursday, August 28.
In a statement posted on Friday, August 29, 2025, the authority said the congestion began at around 8:30 pm along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway and was worsened by lane indiscipline, resulting in a traffic jam that stretched between Naivasha and Kikopey.
The situation was further compounded by the large number of motorists returning from Gilgil, where the National Youth Service (NYS) held a pass-out parade earlier in the day.

“The Authority regrets to bring to the attention of the public that from around 2030hrs yesterday, congestion developed along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway. This was worsened by lane indiscipline, which resulted in a traffic gridlock currently beying experienced between Naivasha and Kikopey,” KeNHA said in a statement.
Alternative routes
To ease the pressure on the highway, KeNHA announced two alternative routes for motorists. Those travelling from Gilgil can use the Gilgil–Olkalou–Dundori–Lanet route, while travellers from Nairobi are advised to take the Flyover–Njambini–Olkalou–Dundori–Lanet route to bypass the congested stretch.
KeNHA added that it is working closely with traffic police officers on the ground to help clear the snarl-up and restore normal vehicle flow.

Motorists were urged to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline to prevent worsening the congestion.
“Motorists are urged to observe lane discipline and avoid overlapping, as it will make it impossible to ease the congestion. Normal traffic flow is expected to resume gradually through the course of the morning,” the statement read.
The authority said it will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates to ensure that motorists can travel safely and efficiently along this key transport corridor.
