When Cabinet Secretary for Education George Magoha was announcing the 2020 KCSE results, the family of the top candidate Simiyu Robinson Wanjala had their eyes glued on TV.

Their lunch-hour was cut short by the feeling of anxiety that came with thoughts of how the results would be like for their son.

For Wanjala and his father, even though he was confident of performing well, being the top candidate countrywide was out of their equation.

For his mother, she was confident her son would be the best. And indeed, he emerged the best.

Speaking to a local TV, Wanjala says the pronouncement of his name by CS Magoha came with a huge sense of disbelief.

When he heard his name, he says, he moved closer to TV to confirm whether indeed he had gotten the CS well or if he heard something different.

” I did not believe I had heard my name, in fact, I moved closer to the TV to confirm it was me,” he said.

Wanjala sat for his KCPE exams at Gachie Primary school, where he scored 409 marks and got admitted to Murang’a High School.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, he credits his teachers for constantly helping him through online learning and being available to his concerns.

He adds that the results were a shocker to him and says he is eager to pursue medicine at the University.

“I would like to take a course in medicine at The University of Nairobi. I had applied for medicine as the first option and engineering as the second,” he said.

Wanjala urges incoming candidates to keep their dreams going and remain focused on becoming whatever they want to be.

He says; “let them keep their dreams. No one should discourage them. Let them continue working hard and keeping God first.”

His parents have also thanked his teachers for holding their son’s hand throughout his learning saying they are extremely happy for their son’s milestone.
