Kawira Mwangaza slams Meru leaders ahead of Ruto’s Mt Kenya tour

Impeached Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has launched a scathing attack on leaders from her county, accusing them of failing to deliver any tangible development for the people.
In a blistering statement on her Facebook account on Monday, March 24, 2025, Mwangaza spared no one, directly calling out all those she held responsible—including the county’s 11 Members of Parliament, former Cabinet Secretaries, the sitting Senator, and the 47 MCAs who spearheaded her impeachment.
According to her, President William Ruto should be fully aware that the leaders he is set to meet have accomplished nothing in their nearly three years in government, leaving him with little to inaugurate once he tours the county.
In a pointed jab, she stated that the only thing they managed to execute flawlessly was orchestrating her impeachment, and if Ruto is commissioning successful projects, he might as well start with that.
“Good morning. As we anticipate President Ruto’s development tour of the Mt. Kenya region, and more specifically Meru County, I must be frank. The 11 MPs, the Senator, current and former CSs, PSs, and all 47 MCAs—after two and a half years of collective effort—have only managed to complete one project: ‘Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s Impeachment Project. That is the only thing these Meru leaders can proudly invite the President to commission. Are there any others?” She wrote on Facebook.
Mwangaza, who was making her second official public statement since her impeachment was upheld by the High Court on Friday, March 17, 2025, further reinforced her remarks by sharing a photo of the leaders she was trolling and maintaining that their leadership had dragged Meru behind.
Opposition leaders
Her remarks came just hours after her husband, Murega Baichu, also lashed out at the leaders who orchestrated her impeachment, warning that they would bear the consequences of their unfair actions.
Speaking during an interview at their Meru-based TV station, Baite TV, on Sunday, March 23, 2025, Baichu declared that he had taken up the role of opposition leader in the county to ensure that he scrutinises the leadership of those currently at the helm.

He argued that with all political figures now seemingly aligned and backing the new governor, Mutuma M’ethingia, Meru residents risked being left without a voice to challenge governance failures and vowed to take up the role.
“Any leader who played a role in the impeachment of Governor Kawira Mwangaza should prepare themselves, because the time has come for this message to reach them and the people of Meru. We need to establish the way forward—leadership cannot sustain itself without oversight and scrutiny. Just as Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi, the 47 MCAs, and others relentlessly questioned my wife’s leadership, they must now apply the same level of accountability to Mutuma’s administration,” Baichu stated.
Ruto’s Mt Kenya tour
Kawira’s and her husband’s remarks come as counties from the Mt Kenya region prepare to roll out the red carpet for the President, who has expressed his intention to do a development trip there.
The tour will be his first official one since the dramatic impeachment of his former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, who has long styled himself as the region’s political kingpin.
Preparations have been in high gear, and his Deputy, Kithure Kindiki, on Sunday, February 28, 2025, met grassroots leaders from his home county of Tharaka Nithi to strategise on ensuring that the President is accorded a dignified welcome when he starts his visit.

During the gathering—which Kindiki insisted was primarily focused on assessing development projects—he also took the opportunity to set the stage for Ruto’s visit, imploring locals not to follow the example of communities that have recently heckled the Head of State.
According to Kindiki, if the county continues to show unwavering support for the President during this politically sensitive period, it will reap significant developmental rewards, as he [Kindiki] would personally champion their interests before Ruto.
“Show me by a show of hands those who are sending me to speak to the President. Before he arrives, we have work to do. Some claimed I dislike coming home—what will they say now? Because I will be here almost every other week,” he declared.
Ruto’s tour of the area comes hot on the heels of his Nairobi region tour, where he drew massive crowds and lavished residents with grand promises—both on what he has achieved and what he plans to deliver.
However, his Mt Kenya visit is clouded with uncertainty, as his recent trip to neighbouring Isiolo County ended in chaos, with locals booing him off the stage, forcing him to cut short his speech and make a swift exit.
Moreover, since Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment, the Mt. Kenya region has been deeply divided, with a significant faction that previously backed Ruto solely due to Gachagua now shifting their allegiance elsewhere.
