Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has appealed to the County Government of Murang’a to name a street after the late mask hawker Boniface Kariuki, who was shot in Nairobi and later died at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Speaking during the burial of the hawker, which was attended by a host of national and local leaders, Kalonzo remarked that Kariuki should not just die and be forgotten.

“I am appealing to the County Government of Murang’a, with the recommendation of the executive, that a street in this county should be named after Boniface Kariuki,” Kalonzo said.

Immortalise Boniface

“We want to immortalise Boniface; he would not just lie here dead and forgotten. It will not happen.”

The remarks came after leaders attending the event castigated President William Ruto’s government over the death, urging residents to ensure that he becomes a one-term president after the 2027 polls.

Speaking during the burial ceremony, Starehe MP Amos Mwago urged Kenyans to show respect to hawkers, observing that he had been raised by a mother who was a hawker.

“I was raised in the streets of Nairobi by my mother, who was a hawker. If you come across the hawkers, do not despise them because hawkers can produce leaders,” Mwago remarked.

Vote out Ruto

Mwago indicated that the only way to register dissatisfaction with Kariuki’s killing was to vote out President William Ruto in the next general election.

“The only way we shall avenge Boniface Kariuki is to ensure that we send Ruto home in 2027. Next time, when we go to vote, we must take a good look at a leader’s history. People who were adversely mentioned at the ICC, and in the early 90s, should not be elected in this country,” he stated.

Kariuki was fatally shot in the head by police during demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District on June 17, 2025.

The protests were sparked by the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang in police custody. Kariuki succumbed to his injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital, leading to widespread outrage and calls for justice.

A police officer associated with the killing of the hawker has since been arraigned in court and is set to answer to the charges surrounding the incident.
