Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has come out to absolve Rigathi Gachagua of blame over his past comments, where the then Deputy President took a swipe at the community’s voting bloc.

In a rare show of defense while appearing on Kameme TV on Monday, June 30, 2025, Kalonzo shielded the former DP from remarks of slighting the votes of the Kamba community as inconsequential.

Kalonzo, who has since linked up with Gachagua in the opposition fold under the People’s Loyal Opposition coalition, opined that the impeached DP was solely challenging the community over their voting pattern.

“He was trying to urge Kambas to turn out in number and vote, Kalonzo responded while quizzed over the ex-DP’s comment.

Kamba’s turnout

He, however, promised that Gachagua would be amazed at the massive turnout if the opposition picks him as the candidate to battle it out against Ruto in the coming polls.

“I am telling you, if I am on the ballot, for example, I don’t think there is anyone from the community who will not turn out to vote. He will be happy with the turnout from our people. We will recreate the so-called tyranny of numbers that has been spoken about in our past,” he stated.

The foregoing comes after Kalonzo also backed himself as the best-suited candidate for the opposition outfit to contest the 2027 presidential contest.

The former VP, while commenting on how the opposition will come to a consensus on one candidate to challenge Ruto, expressed optimism they will get there once the time to make the decision comes.

“I am confident we will cross that bridge when the time comes. I have made public my stance on this, and I’m confident we will reach an agreement guided by a very important consideration of our unity,” he stated.

Best suited for presidency

Kalonzo, who has shelved his presidential dreams in support of an alternative candidate, reiterated that his candidacy will be a winning ticket for the opposition.

“I believe it is the aspiration of many that my partners will see that too and decide that if I get the ticket, then Ruto will be a one-term president. I believe if we want Ruto home, I should get the ticket,” he added.

He also dismissed assertions that he was not ready to back an alternative candidate if he failed to get the flag bearer’s ticket.

“We and the Wiper party are now rebranded for this task. We are ready to take the youth’s agenda. We are trying to convince each other with Marth Gachagua and the team.  I won’t say I will not support another if I don’t get the ticket. We should not be creating scenarios,” he stated.
