Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called on counties, teachers, parents, and the private sector to rally behind the government’s renewed efforts to position agriculture as a viable and exciting career path for young Kenyans.

Speaking in Nyeri County on Saturday, August 2, 2025, during the official relaunch of the rebranded 4-K Clubs, CS Kagwe emphasised that the youth hold the key to the country’s future food security and agribusiness innovation.

“Let’s empower our youth to cultivate more than crops; let them grow prosperity and innovation,” he said.

The rebranded 4-K Clubs are being rolled out in all 31,218 public primary schools nationwide.

So far, 1,222 trainers of trainers have been deployed in 36 counties, with 245 schools already equipped with greenhouses, irrigation kits, incubators, and value-added tools to support hands-on learning.

He appealed directly to teachers, parents, and county governments to provide ongoing support, mentorship, and funding where possible, saying that true transformation will only occur through collective ownership of the youth agriculture agenda.

CS Kagwe also made a heartfelt appeal to alumni of former 4-K Clubs to reconnect with their roots and help nurture the next generation.

“Let us go back and give back. The communities that raised us can be transformed if we lend a hand, whether through mentorship, resources, or partnerships that make agriculture attractive and sustainable for the next generation,” he added.

Agriculture sector allocation

This initiative comes a month after the government allocated Ksh47.6 billion to the country’s agricultural sector to reduce food imports and revamp export crops.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, June 11, 2025, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) John Mbadi announced allocating Ksh10.2 billion to the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), Ksh8 billion towards the fertiliser subsidy program, Ksh5.8 billion towards the food systems resilient project, Ksh5.2 billion for blue economy projects, Ksh3.8 billion for settlement of the landless, and Ksh2.3 billion for the de-risking, inclusion & value enhancement of pastoral economies program.

Further, it has allocated Ksh1.6 billion for the Kenya Livestock Commercialisation Programme, Ksh1.5 billion for sugar reforms, Ksh1.2 billion for a food security and crop diversification project, Ksh1.1 billion for processing and registration of title deeds, Ksh0.9 billion for digitisation and construction of land registries, Ksh0.8 billion for small-scale irrigation and value addition projects, and Ksh0.3 billion towards ending the drought emergency in Kenya (TWENDE).
