It was a sad Monday in Bomet County where distraught workers in the governor’s office fell on the floor after news of their county boss’s death reached them

Dr Joyce Laboso’s demise is yet another tragedy in a series of unfortunate deaths to strike her family.

On June 10, 2008, Joyce lost her sister Lorna in a plane crash.

Lorna, who was an assistant minister died alongside Cabinet member Kipkalya Kones.

The plane carrying the two crashed into a building in Kajong’a market, Narok County near the Maasai Mara game reserve.

That plane, a Cessna light aircraft, had taken off from Wilson Airport heading to Kericho where the two leaders were going to help with logistics for Benjamin Langat’s by-election that was scheduled to be held in Ainamoi Constituency on June 11.

Following Lorna’s death, a by-election was held in the Sotik Constituency on September 25, 2008.

Dr Laboso easily won the Sotik seat on an ODM party ticket, beating 11 other contestants

The former French lecturer at Egerton University put aside her academic career to fill the gap left by her younger sister.

ODM insisted that Lorna’s seat and that of Kones be retained within their respective families to honour their contribution to the party’s campaign in the run-up to the 2007 General Election.

In April 2013, tragedy struck Laboso’s family. This time round, she lost her mother, Rebecca.

Mrs Rebecca, a former prominent farmer and councilor, died while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

Laboso’s mother Rebecca, was reported to have passed away after developing complications from a disease she had been suffering from since November 2012.
