Govt lists universities authorised to offer law courses

The government, through the Council of Legal Education, has issued a list of learning institutions licensed to provide legal studies in the country.

In a notice signed by Council of Legal Education Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jennifer Gitiri on July 8, 2025, the body listed learning institutions accredited to offer diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, and master’s degrees, respectively.

“Under the provisions of Sections 2, 8 (1) (b), 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 48 of the Legal Education Act Chapter 16B Laws of Kenya, the following are the ONLY licensed legal education providers and legal education programs in Kenya as indicated under each respective cluster,” read the notice.

According to the notice, Strathmore Law School, Mount Kenya University School of Law, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa Faculty of Law, and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology School of Law are licensed to offer the Master of Laws program.

On the other hand, the universities accredited to provide the Bachelor of Laws program include UMMA University School of Law,  Africa Nazarene University School of Law, Chuka University Faculty of Law, Moi University School of Law, University of Nairobi Faculty of Law, Egerton University Faculty of Law, Kabarak University School of Law, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law, and Strathmore Law School.

Others include Maseno University School of Law,  South Eastern University of Kenya School of Law, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology School of Law,  Riara Law School,  Kenyatta University School of Law, Daystar University School of Law–Athi River Campus, University of Embu School of Law,  Kisii University School of Law, as well as Mount Kenya University School of Law–Parklands Campus.

Similarly, the institutions licensed to provide the Diploma in Law program include the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law, Mount Kenya University School of Law–Parklands Campus Faculty of Law, Kisii University School of Law, and the Kenya School of Law.

This comes a month after 609 lawyers were admitted to the bar as advocates of the High Court of Kenya.

The ceremony was held at the Supreme Court of Kenya, presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome, on May 23, 2025.
