The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed a new Mpox case, bringing the total number of cases in Kenya to 10.

The ministry revealed in a statement on Thursday, October 3, 2024, that the latest patient is a 35-year-old woman from Kericho County.

“Kenya has recorded one new Mpox case in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 10. The latest case involves a 35-year-old female from Kericho County,” MOH stated.

The Ministry emphasized its commitment to informing the public about the outbreak and highlighted the collective responsibility to prevent the virus from spreading further.

“The Ministry of Health remains vigilant and committed to timely and accurate updates on the ongoing Mpox outbreak in Kenya. As the situation evolves, we are sharing the latest status and reminding the public of the critical role we all play in preventing the spread of this virus. It is imperative that every citizen stays informed and follows the recommended safety measures to protect themselves and their communities,” the statement read in part.

MOH said Kenya’s 10 confirmed Mpox cases are now spread across several counties. Nakuru has reported two cases, while Taita Taveta, Busia, Nairobi, Mombasa, Makueni, Kajiado, Bungoma, and Kericho each have one case. Fortunately, no deaths have been recorded among those infected.

The Ministry also detailed its ongoing efforts in contact tracing and monitoring. Out of 68 traced contacts, 61 have completed the recommended 21-day observation period, with the remaining seven still under surveillance by public health teams and Community Health Promoters (CHPs).

According to MOH, only one contact tested positive during the monitoring period. In addition, to contact tracing, the Ministry said it continues to screen travellers at all Points of Entry (POEs). Over the past 24 hours, 117,377 travellers were screened, pushing the total number of screened individuals to over 1.1 million.

To date, the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) has tested 230 samples, with 10 confirmed positive, 216 negative, and four samples still under testing.

Mpox preventative measures

MOH urged the public to remain cautious and adhere to preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.

  1. Avoid close physical contact with infected individuals or those showing symptoms.
  2. Do not touch items such as bedding or clothing used by infected persons.
