Gachagua urges Gen Z to come out in numbers as vote registration kicks off

By , September 28, 2025

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has appealed to the youthful Gen Z to register as voters in large numbers for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

This comes even as both the broad-based honchos and the United Opposition leaders ramp up their campaign to woo the youths into their camp ahead of the contest.

Speaking on Sunday, September 28, 2025, during a church service in Kajiado County, Gachagua lauded the youth for their recent civic engagement and called on them to take the next important step, registering to vote.

“The tool of change is the voting card. We appeal to young people across the country to register as voters. They have spoken out strongly in recent months, but real change will be achieved at the ballot,” he said.

Gachagua’s call comes after former Chief Justice David Maraga launched a campaign to add 5 million new voters to the register ahead of the 2027 general election.

The DCP party chief emphasised that meaningful transformation requires active participation in the electoral process, adding that young Kenyans should take the lead.

“The installation of a people’s government will be on the ballot. The country is counting on you. You have shown courage and determination, but you must take a step further,” Gachagua said.

Warning the middle class

Gachagua has urged the middle class not to remain passive ahead of 2027, stating their role is important in shaping the nation’s future and sustaining the economy.

He appealed to professionals and salaried Kenyans, calling on them to step up and participate in governance and national transformation.

“I want to make a passionate appeal to our professionals, the payslip holders, the middle class, the bourgeois, that you cannot stay at home and wait for the rest of Kenya to bring change,” Gachagua stated.

Gachagua warned that apathy from the middle class could have devastating economic consequences, stressing that this group forms the backbone of Kenya’s economy.

“When you destroy the middle class, you destroy Kenya’s economy, because they are the drivers of our economy,” Gachagua said.

Already, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, set to begin on Monday, September 29, 2025, as part of its preparations for the 2027 General Election.

In a public notice, the commission urged all eligible Kenyans to register at any IEBC constituency office, except in areas currently undergoing by-elections.

“The commission encourages all unregistered citizens to take advantage of the ongoing exercise and register early,” the IEBC stated.

The services available during the CVR exercise include new voter registration, correction or update of voter details, transfer of registration to a new polling station or constituency, and verification of voter information.
