Gachagua showers Karua with praises during his diaspora tour
By Mabonga Makhanu, July 12, 2025Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, during his US tour, took the opportunity to shower PLP party leader Martha Karua with praises for her consistent role in Kenyan politics.
Speaking in Seattle on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at an event attended by both him and Martha Karua, Gachagua lauded Karua for her long-standing contribution to the liberation of Kenya, something she has been committed to for many years.
“When I looked at the way things are going in Kenya and the struggle that we are having with Kasongo, I thought that I needed to go look for my sister because she has been at it for a longer time than all of us; she has really fought for the liberation of many years,” Gachagua said.
Assuring him of support
He further explained that it was this legacy that prompted him to visit her at her home in Kirinyaga, where he pleaded with her to join him in opposing the current regime, a government he claimed has implemented policies that continue to oppress Kenyans. After their conversation, she accepted and assured him of her support in ensuring that President Ruto is not re-elected in 2027.

“And I went looking for her in her house in Kirinyaga and said, ‘My sister, I have come. This battle is not easy; we need all of us to be together,’ and she was very, very receptive. She was very loving. She listened to me and said, ‘My brother, let’s walk this journey together,’” he added.
Gachagua also added that when he heard Martha Karua would be in Seattle, he couldn’t allow her to be there alone. This, he said, compelled him and his wife to join her for dinner, jokingly adding that “brothers must look after their sisters.”
“So when I was told she was coming here for this dinner, I said I cannot miss and allow her to be alone,” he concluded.
This comes during Gachagua’s tour in the US, with him rallying support from the diasporians. During the meeting, he also urged Mt Kenya musicians not to be swayed by those in power but to stick to their role as entertainers.
