Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has appealed to the United States of America (U.S.A.) President Donald Trump, urging that the vacant U.S. ambassadorial position to Kenya be filled by an individual who will help restore democracy in the country.

Speaking during a public engagement in Kansas City, USA, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, Gachagua said that the next US ambassador to Kenya should have the same democratic conviction and orientation as former envoy Smith Hempstone.

The former DP further stated that the country is currently grappling with pressing concerns over violations of human rights, as well as democracy challenges, which, according to him, are similar to the past struggles that Hempstone helped to restore.

Additionally, Gachagua suggested that a similarly principled ambassador could play a crucial role in reinforcing democratic values and ensuring respect for human rights.

“We are hoping and appealing to the American government, specifically President Donald Trump, that as he chooses an ambassador for Kenya because the position is vacant to consider giving us an ambassador to Kenya of the same calibre and thinking and orientation as Smith Hempstone who came in to help the people of Kenya when they faced similar circumstances of violation of human rights and the eruption of democracy,” he pleaded.

“We will be very happy when we get an ambassador of the calibre of Smith Hempstone to come to Kenya and help us to restore our democracy and to restore the respect of human rights!”

Who is Hempstone

Hempstone, who served from 1989 to 1993, was known for his bold stance against abuses under the late President Daniel Moi, his vocal support for opposition activists, and his influence in steering Kenya toward democratic elections.
