First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has called on every Kenyan to plant 30 trees annually to support the country’s ambitious target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
In a statement on her X account on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, the First Lady highlighted the theme of this year’s World Environment Day, which focuses on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.
“The National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Campaign in Kenya is in line with the 2024 theme, which aims to achieve 30% tree cover by planting 15 billion trees by 2032. This vision is achievable if we all commit to growing 30 trees every year,” Rachel Ruto stated.
The First Lady emphasized the role of her office in contributing to this goal, committing to grow 500 million trees.
She said her office aims to promote women and youth-led climate action, which includes the restoration of degraded forests, establishment of commercial tree nurseries, and development of agroforestry and fruit gardens in learning institutions.
Additionally, she said her office will facilitate access to finance for local climate action initiatives.
“My office and I have committed to growing 500 million trees by promoting women and youth-led climate action, including restoration of degraded forests, commercial tree nurseries, agroforestry and fruit gardens in learning institutions, as well as facilitating access to finance for local climate action,” Rachel added.
14 million trees
On May 24, 2024, Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said that the country planted 14 million trees on the first-ever National Tree Growing Day which was marked on Friday, May 10, 2024.
“We managed to plant 14 million trees during the National Tree Growing Day marked on 10th May 2024. We are not relenting on our whole-of-government, whole-of-nation approach towards tackling the ravages of climate change,” Mwaura stated.
“The Executive Office of the President under the headship of the Chief of Staff & Head of the Public Service is accelerating the President’s ambition of growing 15 billion trees by 2032 in conformity with the government’s National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Strategy,” he added.
