Eric Wamumbi calls for Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s impeachment
By David Nthua, October 21, 2025Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi has called for the immediate impeachment of Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga following his controversial remarks about the death of the late Raila Odinga.
Through a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Wamumbi urged Members of the Nyeri County Assembly to table a motion of impeachment against the county boss, accusing him of bringing shame to the Mt Kenya region through reckless utterances.
“Nyeri County MCAs, over to you. That motion should only have one charge. Table it tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday the 22nd of October 2025. Mt Kenya region will not fight with the rest of Kenya because of one reckless person. Apana. Impeach!” Wamumbi wrote.

The legislator reiterated that he does not share Kahiga’s sentiments. Earlier, Wamumbi had condemned Kahiga for what he described as “shallow and irresponsible” remarks.
“Governor Mutahi Kahiga, my Governor. The statement you have made today about the passing of Raila Odinga is very unfortunate, reckless, shallow and irresponsible,” Wamumbi said.
“As a son from the Kikuyu community and Nyeri County, I dissociate myself from your school of thought. Raila did not rest so that the Kikuyu community could benefit. You can do better, shame!” he added.
Kahiga’s controversial remarks
Governor Kahiga sparked national outrage after appearing to link Raila Odinga’s death to divine intervention, suggesting it was “God’s plan” to reset Kenya’s political landscape.

“You guys can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that.
“We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us,” Kahiga said while addressing mourners in Nyeri.
He continued, “Because the plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans.
“But God came and brought this thing. Who is God? Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole?
“He came through in His own way. He saw up there that people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”
The remarks have drawn widespread condemnation across the political divide, with leaders and citizens alike accusing Kahiga of mocking Raila’s death and exploiting national grief for political mileage.
Wamumbi’s call for impeachment now adds mounting pressure on Kahiga, whose future as governor may hang in the balance amid growing calls for accountability and respect during the national mourning period.
