Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa has been arrested, K24 Digital can authoritatively report.

Echesa was arrested at 5:30pm on Friday, March 5 at his home in Shibale, Mumias Central in Kakamega County.

The ex-Sports minister was arrested for assaulting an IEBC presiding officer, Peter Okura, at Bulonga Primary School polling station on Thursday, March 4 during the Matungu by-election voting.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hillary Mutyambai said Friday that they would consider Echesa an “armed and dangerous person” after he refused to surrender himself to the authorities over the Thursday incident.

Echesa is being held in lawful custody at Kakamega Central Police Station.

A police officer privy to Echesa’s arrest said the former CS will spend the weekend behind bars, awaiting arraignment on Monday, March 8.

“We won’t release him on police bond,” said the officer, who is not mandated to speak publicly.
