A female government employee, her son and another man believed to be her boyfriend were on Tuesday, February 23, afternoon found murdered in her house at the government quarters along Jogoo Road, Nairobi.
The woman identified as Charity Cheboi, 34, was attached to the Mathare branch office of the Registrar of Persons under the Ministry of Interior.
The partly decomposed body of the woman and her son were found in the bedroom while that of the man was found inside the bathroom with both his legs and hands tied.
Nairobi Region Police Commander Rashid Yakub said there were signs of serious struggle in the house before the murders as the rooms were found in disarray.
In what baffled the detectives, the woman held a rosary in her left hand while the son, who lay next to her on the bed, also had a rosary held in his right hand.
“Both the woman and her 8-year old son had vomited on the bed. They lay side by side,” police said.
The woman was last seen on Sunday, February 21, with her son while coming from Our Lady of Visitation Church on Jogoo Road. At the time, they were buying groceries.
When the son, who is a pupil at Mary Immaculate Educational Centre and Primary School failed to report to school on Monday, the school administration called his father to find out where he was.
The eight-year-old son is identified as Allan.
The father, who does not live with them, tried reaching them in vain and later decided to visit the family.
Earlier, other relatives said they tried calling her but her calls went unanswered.
He knocked on their door but no one opened it and later some neighbours peeped through the window.
“The sitting room was in a total mess and they suspected something was wrong. They then broke the door and discovered the bodies,” police said.
According to some of the neighbours, the man only known as Kevin, a third-year student at Karen Baptist Theological Seminary, was however seen on Monday when he sent for charcoal.
A neighbour said the man asked her to help him light a charcoal jiko but she did not.
“The charcoal jiko, which had not been lit, was found in the toilet where the body of the man was. The man’s hands and legs were tied using a computer cable. His body however appeared fresh,” a senior detective told People Daily.
Detectives from the Crime Scene Investigations from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations visited the scene and collected forensic evidence and photographed the bodies before they were later removed to the mortuary.
Detectives said they had already identified at least three people whom they believed could help them unravel the mysterious murders.
