Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) on Sunday, August 8 seized a total of 100 Kgs of elephant tusks worth over Ksh 10million in Kangari, Murang’a County.

In a statement shared on their social media pages, the detectives also arrested four men linked with the illegal business.

The four Martin Mungai Nginya, 58, Peter Macharia Njuguna, 32, Edward Mwambura Kamau, 55 and 43-year old Samuel Njuguna Mwirigi were found in possession of 19 pieces of the jumbo tusks.

According to the DCI, the suspects were nabbed after a successful ambush by ‘Interpol Usalama 7’ who got hold of them from their cars.

The two vehicles, KBT 660T Toyota Allion and KAP 374V Toyota 100 had been parked strategically to enable smooth transactions.

During the operation, the detectives recovered the Jumbo tusks from the cars’ boot which had been stashed in two sacks disguised as loads of cabbages.

They have since been placed in custody and are undergoing investigative interviewing, with detectives seeking to effect more arrests on possible poachers and the targeted market for the products.
