The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohammed Amin, has said that the Central Police Station commander, Samson Talaam, should be treated as a prime suspect in the murder of Albert Ojwang’, who died at the hands of police officers.

Responding to questions from senators on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Amin revealed that DCI officers handed over Albert safely to police officers at the Central Police Station, before later learning that the 31-year-old teacher had been killed.

“Before the booking, the reporting personnel called the OCS, and it is unfortunate that it is being said that he declined to book the suspect,” Amin said.

“Talaam is the OCS for the Central Police Station, and from the totality of things, he should be treated as a prime suspect in the matter.”

Brought safely to Nairobi

Amin said that his officers had picked up Ojwang from his home in Kabondo-Kasipul constituency in Homa Bay, briefly booked him at the Mawego Police Station before transporting him to Nairobi.

He allayed reports that Ojwang’ may have been taken to the DCI headquarters for interrogations before being booked at the Central Police Station.

“From Homa Bay, the suspect was driven to Central Police Station straight, and nowhere else. We can confirm this by the movement of the Subaru Forester vehicle through GPS,” Amin stated.

He equally told the senators that the DCI officers, who arrested Albert in Homa Bay, were very kind to him, and even offered him refreshments along the way to Nairobi in Narok.

Utmost humility

“The deceased was treated with utmost humility from Mawego to Nairobi. At Narok, he asked for refreshments, and he was given refreshments by the arresting officers,” Amin said.

The statement was corroborated by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who told the senators that Ojwang’ had informed his wife of his safe arrival in Nairobi.

“He was given an opportunity to call his family back home, where he did indicate to his wife that he had reached Central Police Station, and that he was safe,” Kanja said.

“That confirms that when he reached the Central Police Station, he was alright, from his own statement to his family.”

The revelations come just days after Kanja interdicted six police officers who were on duty on the material night when Ojwang’ was booked into the facility.

Among those interdicted by Kanja were Talaam, his deputy Samuel Nganga, Charles Muriuki, Debian Lusweti, who is a crime aid at the station, Evaline Kanyiri, who was in charge of the reports office and Peter Kimani, whose role was to supervise activities inside the cells.
