A family of six in Mpeketoni, Lamu county is in mourning after their 19-year-old son committed suicide.

According to a televised report, the teenager is said to have hanged himself in the wee hours of Thursday, February 3 on a tree at their home.

Speaking to journalists, one of the teenager’s relatives said he might have been in distress after losing both his parents last year.

“His mother and father passed on. I am appealing to those who have heard about this case to come out and talk to the children of this home and offer them pieces of advice,” one of the relatives said.

A neighbour and friend of the deceased said he spoke to the teenager earlier on adding that he did not show any signs of emotional distress.

“I was told of what had transpired and rushed to his homestead immediately. We had spoken before and he did not show any signs of distress,” the friend said.

The teenager’s brother however said that the deceased was lonely and depressed, a factor that might have driven him to commit suicide.

“He is my youngest brother. He was lonely and depressed. And I think that is why he took his own life,” the teenager’s brother said.
