Caroli Omondi: Harambee Stars rewards come from taxpayers’ pockets

By , August 18, 2025

The debate surrounding rewards for Harambee Stars players has continued to spark reactions, with questions emerging on the source of funding for the incentives promised after the team’s recent performances.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, August 118, 2025, MPs and Senators weighed in on the matter, pointing to taxpayers’ money, government funds, and contributions from different state institutions.

Where is the funding for the rewards given to Harambee Stars players coming from?” In response, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi was categorical: “From taxpayers. The question is whether it was included in the budget.”

Lack of clarity on reward criteria

MP Omondi emphasized that while Kenyans are united in celebrating the Harambee Stars, transparency on financial commitments remains essential. He noted that there exists a sports fund that could cater for incentives such as the two-bedroom affordable housing units promised to players, but the criteria for allocation have not been communicated.

“There is a sports fund that should pay for the two-bedroom affordable units awarded to Harambee Stars players. People are unaware of the criteria used, and there is a lack of clarity, causing anxiety,” Omondi said.

He further expressed concern over the broader fiscal state of the country, warning that the government’s heavy borrowing from the local market could squeeze access to credit for ordinary citizens. “The government is taking loans excessively from the market. This year alone, it plans to borrow Ksh 480 billion, which means that banks will have less incentive to lend to ordinary people,” he cautioned.

Adding to the discussion, Senator Mutinda suggested that part of the funding had come directly from President William Ruto and also from the Ministry of Sports. Meanwhile, Senator Joe Nyutu struck a unifying tone, saying, “This is one of the rare moments when we unite as Kenyans. We encourage Harambee Stars and other sports teams to continue bringing that kind of pride to our country. However, there are questions regarding the source of the monetary rewards.”

Call for accountability

The debate highlights the fine balance between celebrating national achievements and ensuring accountability in public spending. While Kenyans are proud of the Harambee Stars’ accomplishments, leaders are insisting that the government must clarify how rewards are financed, especially at a time when the country is grappling with a growing debt burden.
