Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei has dismissed claims that former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi expects favours or rewards from President William Ruto, following his decision to withdraw from the Baringo senatorial by-election.

Speaking during a televised interview on Monday, October 13, 2025, Sigei said the KANU chairman’s decision was guided by principle rather than personal gain.

“From where I sit, Gideon doesn’t need to be done for anything other than to be told, ‘This is where my vision for the country is, my brother,’” Sigei said. “It’s about coming together as Kenyans, not about individuals or regions.”

Sigei, responding to questions about the remarks Ruto made in his native Kalenjin dialect, said the comments were misinterpreted.

“The president says in his mother tongue that Moi protected him,” he explained, “and people quickly asked why he wouldn’t protect Gideon?” Sigei clarified that Ruto never said Moi “protected” him, but rather acknowledged that the late President Daniel arap Moi gave him a platform to grow as a leader.

“He didn’t say he protected me,” Sigei noted. “He said Moi assisted me to be where I am because he was holding the position of leadership of the president. What stops me from using the same platform to help Gideon to the next level?”

When asked what exactly President Ruto planned to “do for” Gideon Moi, Sigei downplayed any suggestion of political favour.

“Well, I don’t know, but from where I sit, Gideon doesn’t need to be done for anything,” he said. “The conversation is about the future where we can be as a country if we come together. It’s not about who gets what, but how we build Kenya to 2050 and beyond.”

Gideon Moi has since explained his decision to step down from the upcoming Baringo senatorial by-election, scheduled for November 27, 2025.

Speaking while hosting President Ruto at his Kabarak home on October 10, 2025, Moi said his withdrawal followed discussions with the President at State House the previous day.

He revealed that he had intended to contest the seat left vacant by the late Senator William Cheptumo, who died in February 2025, but chose to heed the President’s call for unity.

“The president knows why I never made it to the ballot,” Moi said. “I had some unfinished business in Baringo, but because President Ruto was elected by Kenyans, I decided to listen to him.”
